“In great misfortunes, he told himself, people want to be alone. They have a right to be. And the misfortunes that occur within one are the greatest. Surely the saddest thing in the world is falling out of loveif once one has ever fallen in.
Falling out, for him, seemed to mean falling out of all domestic and social relations, out of his place in the human family, indeed.”

“The appeal of the New Right is simply that it seems to promise that nothing will change in the domestic realm. People are terrified of change there, because its the last humanizing force left in society, and they think, correctly, that it must be retained.”
—Gerda Lerner (b. 1920)
“Old man, its four flights up and for what?
Your room is hardly any bigger than your bed.
Puffing as you climb, you are a brown woodcut
stooped over the thin rail and the wornout tread.”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
