Future Southern Extension
In 2002, the state DEP acquired an additional 1.0 mile (1.6 km) of railbed in East Hampton, continuing the trail south from the current Watrous Street terminus to Aldens Crossing Road. A bridge has been constructed to carry the trail across a brook where the original rail bridge was missing. The bridge was designed and built by cadets of the United States Coast Guard Academy under the supervision of William O'Neill, an adjunct professor of engineering at the academy and former state governor. Due to confusion as to which state agency had ownership of the stretch of land, the bridge was built without the necessary permissions, and almost demolished but allowed to remain due to a lease agreement with the town.

Famous quotes containing the words future, southern and/or extension:
“Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.”
—Audre Lorde (19341992)
“I think those Southern writers [William Faulkner, Carson McCullers] have analyzed very carefully the buildup in the South of a special consciousness brought about by the self- condemnation resulting from slavery, the humiliation following the War Between the States and the hope, sometimes expressed timidly, for redemption.”
—Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
“Slavery is founded in the selfishness of mans natureopposition to it, is [in?] his love of justice.... Repeal the Missouri compromiserepeal all compromisesrepeal the declaration of independencerepeal all past history, you still can not repeal human nature. It still will be the abundance of mans heart, that slavery extension is wrong; and out of the abundance of his heart, his mouth will continue to speak.”
—Abraham Lincoln (18091865)
