Aeolian Islands - UNESCO World Heritage Sites

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

The Aeolian Islands are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. However, inaccuracy, the missing closure of a pumice quarry, and the oncoming building of some four harbours by the shore of the sole town of Lipari pose a threat to the islands' place on the list, according to the Italian UNESCO Commission.

It is to be remembred that before the years 2000, Dr. Sc. Sergio Cucchiara, sicilian geologist, discovered a new specie of lizard on the rock "Canna" which is part of the island Filicudi: the Podarcis Sicula Cucchiarai, registered at the University of Palermo, and at the British Museum in London. From this time on, this lizard became the symbol of Nature’s delicate equilibrium in the Eolian Islands. Since it is part of the natural park and UNESCO’s heritage, the Canna of Filicudi cannot be visited anymore.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or heritage:

Interpretation is the revenge of the intellect upon art. Even more. It is the revenge of the intellect upon the world. To interpret is to impoverish, to deplete the world—in order to set up a shadow world of “meanings.”
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)

Flowers ... that are so pathetic in their beauty, frail as the clouds, and in their colouring as gorgeous as the heavens, had through thousands of years been the heritage of children—honoured as the jewellery of God only by them—when suddenly the voice of Christianity, counter-signing the voice of infancy, raised them to a grandeur transcending the Hebrew throne, although founded by God himself, and pronounced Solomon in all his glory not to be arrayed like one of these.
    Thomas De Quincey (1785–1859)
