Advanced Gun System

The Advanced Gun System is a naval gun system under development by BAE Systems Armaments Systems (formerly United Defense) for the Zumwalt class destroyer of the United States Navy. Production has started; the first magazine was delivered to the U.S. Navy on 25 May 2010.

Originally designed for mounting as a vertical gun, this 155 mm (6.1") caliber gun has since been slated for mounting within a more conventional turret arrangement. The AGS is designed to offer a weapon system capable of delivering precision munitions at a high rate of fire and at over-the-horizon ranges. As a vertical gun system it would only have been capable of firing guided munitions; the turret mounting will allow the use of unguided munitions as well.

Famous quotes containing the words advanced, gun and/or system:

But generally speaking philistinism presupposes a certain advanced state of civilization where throughout the ages certain traditions have accumulated in a heap and have started to stink.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)

What cannot stand must fall; and the measure of our sincerity and therefore of the respect of men, is the amount of health and wealth we will hazard in the defence of our right. An old farmer, my neighbor across the fence, when I ask him if he is not going to town-meeting, says: “No, ‘t is no use balloting, for it will not stay; but what you do with the gun will stay so.”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Psychoanalysis is an attempt to examine a person’s self-justifications. Hence it can be undertaken only with the patient’s cooperation and can succeed only when the patient has something to gain by abandoning or modifying his system of self-justification.
    Thomas Szasz (b. 1920)
