Actinic Keratosis - Treatment

Treatment

Various modalities are employed in the treatment of actinic keratosis:

  • Ingenol mebutate 0.05% and 0.015% gel for treatment of the trunk and extremities or the face and scalp, respectively. Duration of therapy is 2 days for the 0.05% gel and 3 days for the 0.015% gel
  • Diclofenac sodium 3% gel, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, Recommended duration of therapy is 60 to 90 days
  • Cryosurgery, e.g. with liquid nitrogen, by "freezing off" the actinic keratosis
  • 5-fluorouracil (a chemotherapy agent): a cream that contains this medication causes actinic keratosis to become red and inflamed before they fall off
  • Photodynamic therapy: this new therapy involves injecting a chemical into the bloodstream, which makes the lesions more sensitive to any form of light.
  • Laser, notably CO2 and Er:YAG lasers, a Laser resurfacing technique is often used with diffuse actinic keratosis
  • Electrocautery: burning off actinic keratosis with electricity
  • Imiquimod (Aldara), an immune enhancing agent for topical treatment
  • Different forms of surgery

Regular follow-up after the treatment is advised by many physicians. The regular checks are to make sure no new lesions have developed and that old ones haven't become thicker.

Famous quotes containing the word treatment:

The treatment of the incident of the assault upon the sailors of the Baltimore is so conciliatory and friendly that I am of the opinion that there is a good prospect that the differences growing out of that serious affair can now be adjusted upon terms satisfactory to this Government by the usual methods and without special powers from Congress.
    Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

[17th-century] Puritans were the first modern parents. Like many of us, they looked on their treatment of children as a test of their own self-control. Their goal was not to simply to ensure the child’s duty to the family, but to help him or her make personal, individual commitments. They were the first authors to state that children must obey God rather than parents, in case of a clear conflict.
    C. John Sommerville (20th century)

Judge Ginsburg’s selection should be a model—chosen on merit and not ideology, despite some naysaying, with little advance publicity. Her treatment could begin to overturn a terrible precedent: that is, that the most terrifying sentence among the accomplished in America has become, “Honey—the White House is on the phone.”
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
