The Name
The company's first convenience outlets were known as Tote'm Stores since customers "toted" away their purchases, and some even sported genuine Alaskan totem poles in front. In 1946, the name Tote'm was changed to 7-Eleven to reflect the stores' new, extended hours—7 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week. The company's corporate name was changed from Southland Corporation to 7-Eleven, Inc. in 1999.

Famous quotes containing the words the and/or name:
“Behind every individual closes organization; before him opens liberty, the Better, the Best. The first and worse races are dead. The second and imperfect races are dying out, or remain for the maturing of the higher. In the latest race, in man, every generosity, every new perception, the love and praise he extorts from his fellows, are certificates of advance out of fate into freedom.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“What is it? a learned man
Could give it a clumsy name.
Let him name it who can,
The beauty would be the same.”
—Alfred Tennyson (18091892)
