2008 Pittsburgh Pirates Season

The 2008 Pittsburgh Pirates season was the 127th season of the franchise. It was the first under new president Frank Coonelly, general manager Neal Huntington, and manager John Russell. Unable to improve on their 68 – 94, last place finish during the 2007 season, the Pirates have not had a winning record since 1992. The season was the final of play-by-play announcer Lanny Frattare, whose 33 year tenure as Pirates' broadcaster was the longest in franchise history.

Famous quotes containing the words pittsburgh, pirates and/or season:

The largest business in American handled by a woman is the Money Order Department of the Pittsburgh Post-office; Mary Steel has it in charge.
    Lydia Hoyt Farmer (1842–1903)

Well, you Yankees and your holy principle about savin’ the Union. You’re plunderin’ pirates that’s what. Well, you think there’s no Confederate army where you’re goin’. You think our boys are asleep down here. Well, they’ll catch up to you and they’ll cut you to pieces you, you nameless, fatherless scum. I wish I could be there to see it.
    John Lee Mahin (1902–1984)

Much poetry seems to be aware of its situation in time and of its relation to the metronome, the clock, and the calendar. ... The season or month is there to be felt; the day is there to be seized. Poems beginning “When” are much more numerous than those beginning “Where” of “If.” As the meter is running, the recurrent message tapped out by the passing of measured time is mortality.
    William Harmon (b. 1938)
