2007 HSBC World Match Play Championship

The 2007 HSBC World Match Play Championship was the 44th HSBC World Match Play Championship played and the 5th time played as an official European Tour event. It was from October 11 to October 14 at The Wentworth Club. The champion received €1,443,830 (£1,000,000 or $2,042,513.20) making it the biggest first prize in golf. Unlike the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, each match played was a 36-hole match. At the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship the only 36-hole match played is the championship. Every other match is a 18-hole match. Ernie Els defeated Ángel Cabrera 6&4 in the final to win the tournament for the 7th time.

Famous quotes containing the words world, match and/or play:

Never mind the ridicule, never mind the defeat: up again, old heart!—it seems to say,—there is victory yet for all justice; and the true romance which the world exists to realize, will be the transformation of genius into practical power.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

What have Massachusetts and the North sent a few sane representatives to Congress for, of late years?... All their speeches put together and boiled down ... do not match for manly directness and force, and for simple truth, the few casual remarks of crazy John Brown on the floor of the Harper’s Ferry engine-house,—that man whom you are about to hang, to send to the other world, though not to represent you there.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The critic lives at second hand. He writes about. The poem, the novel, or the play must be given to him; criticism exists by the grace of other men’s genius. By virtue of style, criticism can itself become literature. But usually this occurs only when the writer is acting as critic of his own work or as outrider to his own poetics, when the criticism of Coleridge is work in progress or that of T.S. Eliot propaganda.
    George Steiner (b. 1929)
