Despite the Raiders' pathetic showing on offense, the defense jumped from 27th in 2005 to 3rd place out of 32 NFL teams. The Raiders also had eight halftime leads, including their two wins as well as five 4th quarter leads (Arizona, Pittsburgh, Denver, @ Kansas City, @ San Diego).
On January 4, 2007, Shell was released from his position as head coach, joining Red Conkright, Joe Bugel and Hue Jackson as the three coaches in the franchises history to be fired after only one season as head coach. Shell was fired despite owner Al Davis saying a year ago that it was a mistake to fire Shell in 1994.
