The 2006 European cold wave was an unusual cold wave which resulted in abnormal winter conditions over much of Europe. This marked a period of unusual weather over much of Europe where southern Europe saw cold and snow while places in northern Norway saw abnormally mild conditions. The phenomenon started on 20 January in Russia with temperatures below -40°C and extended to Central Europe. Parts of Poland, Slovakia, and Austria saw temperatures drop below -30°C. The cold had resulted in the deaths of up to 50 people in Russia and a significant death toll in both in most of Eastern Europe including Moldova and Romania. A final death toll may be in the region of around 200 deaths in Europe. The abnormal conditions gradually abated towards the end of the month.

Its always cold in summer, warm in winter.”

The wave cry, the wind cry, the vast waters
Of the petrel and the porpoise. In my end is my beginning.”
