The UAW-GM Quality 500 was held at Lowe's Motor Speedway on October 13. Qualifying was rained out, so points leader Tony Stewart started on the pole. Jamie McMurray, subbing for an injured Sterling Marlin, won his first race in his second career start, setting a new modern era NASCAR record for quickest win.

  • The race had a long rain delay that lasted more than 3 hours and when the rain clears and the track continues to dry, track officials decided to start the race under yellow after 3:30pm until the green flag drops on lap 5 at 3:45pm. The sunset time at Charlotte was 6:51pm and the checkered flag drops at 7:17pm, just 26 minutes after the sunset. Thanks to the large rating boost, NASCAR decided that the second race at Lowe's Motor Speedway will moved from Sunday afternoon to Saturday night for the first nighttime running of the UAW-GM Quality 500 in 2003.
