The 2002 FA Community Shield was an association football match played between Arsenal, league and cup double winners, and Liverpool, who finished as league runners-up. It was held at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, on 11 August 2002. It was the first Community Shield to be contested following the renaming of the competition. The match marked Arsenal's 15th shield appearance and Liverpool's 18th.
Watched by a crowd of 67,337, Arsenal scored the only goal of the match, when substitute Gilberto Silva on his debut, collected a pass from Dennis Bergkamp and struck the ball through goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek's legs. Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger praised the match winner in his post-match interview, while opposing manager Gérard Houllier felt the result showed that his team needed more game time and attention to passing, in order to improve. The result meant Arsenal were the first team to win the shield outright 11 times, while it marked Liverpool's first defeat at the Millennium Stadium.

Famous quotes containing the words community and/or shield:
“Commitment, by its nature, frees us from ourselves and, while it stands us in opposition to some, it joins us with others similarly committed. Commitment moves us from the mirror trap of the self absorbed with the self to the freedom of a community of shared values.”
—Michael Lewis (late 20th century)
“The lichen on the rocks is a rude and simple shield which beginning and imperfect Nature suspended there. Still hangs her wrinkled trophy.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
