The 1997 Rugby World Cup Sevens was the second edition of the tournament and held in Hong Kong. Fiji defeated South Africa 24-21 to take the title for the first time. The match is still considered one of the best Sevens matches of all time. The Fiji team had promised the country it would return with the title, and captain Waisale Serevi had also promised his daughters the same.

Famous quotes containing the words world, cup and/or sevens:
“In the operative opinion of the world, he who is already fully provided with what is necessary for him, that man shall have more; while he who is deplorably destitute of the same, he shall have taken away from him even that which he hath. Yet the world vows it is a very plain, downright matter-of-fact, plodding, humane sort of world.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“Sisters define their rivalry in terms of competition for the gold cup of parental love. It is never perceived as a cup which runneth over, rather a finite vessel from which the more one sister drinks, the less is left for the others.”
—Elizabeth Fishel (20th century)
“See,
how they trace
across the very-marble
of this place,
bright sevens and printed fours,
elevens and careful eights....”
—Hilda Doolittle (18861961)
