Even though they were favored to win, Australia went into the final having lost three of their past four games at Wembley (the only win being the World Cup final of 1992) and with 11 of their 17 players under the age of 24. They'd also won their semi-final against New Zealand only after a period of extra time.
Australia's hooker, Andrew Johns was named man-of-the-match in the final.

Famous quotes containing the words world, cup and/or final:
“The fact is, that civilisation requires slaves.... Human slavery is wrong, insecure, and demoralising. On mechanical slavery, on the slavery of the machine, the future of the world depends.”
—Oscar Wilde (18541900)
“I believe that water is the only drink for a wise man: wine is not so noble a liquor; and think of dashing the hopes of a morning with a cup of warm coffee, or of an evening with a dish of tea! Ah, how low I fall when I am tempted by them! Even music may be intoxicating. Such apparently slight causes destroyed Greece and Rome, and will destroy England and America.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“What he loved so much in the plant morphological structure of the tree was that given a fixed mathematical basis, the final evolution was so incalculable.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
