1995 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 M)
The 2nd FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) was an international swimming meet held on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 30 November until 3 December 1995. The meet featured 32 events swum in a short course (25m) pool.
Australia topped the medal table with 26 medals (12-7-7). Four women's World Records were established: Australia's Samantha Riley set two (100 and 200 breast), and one each by China's Limin Liu (200 fly), and Costa Rica's Claudia Poll's (200 free)--Costa Rica's first-ever. The Canadian women won the gold in the 4×200 m freestyle relay, beating perennial rivals Australia by almost three seconds. New Zealand won the men's 4×100 medley relay, and beat Australia for the first time ever. USA swimmers picked up three medals: one of their poorest-showings-ever at an international swim meet. In the USA's defense, the nation decided to attend in late-September; and many of their leading swimmers were not interested, as the U.S. Olympic trials were to be held in early March, the meet dates fell in the middle (rather than the end) of the USA's annual competition season (particularly the college season), the USA had just hosted the 1995 Pan Pacs, and the USA would host the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or swimming:
“Whoso desireth to know what will be hereafter, let him think of what is past, for the world hath ever been in a circular revolution; whatsoever is now, was heretofore; and things past or present, are no other than such as shall be again: Redit orbis in orbem.”
—Sir Walter Raleigh (15521618)
“Mead had studied for the ministry, but had lost his faith and took great delight in blasphemy. Capt. Charles H. Frady, pioneer missionary, held a meeting here and brought Mead back into the fold. He then became so devout that, one Sunday, when he happened upon a swimming party, he shot at the people in the river, and threatened to kill anyone he again caught desecrating the Sabbath.”
—For the State of Nebraska, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
