1991 College World Series

The 1991 College World Series was played at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska from May 31 to June 8. The forty-fifth tournament's champion was Louisiana State University, coached by Skip Bertman. The Most Outstanding Player was Gary Hymel of Louisiana State University. This was the first year the 8 qualifying teams were split into two double elimination brackets of 4 teams each (the 1,8,4, and 5 seeds in one bracket, with the 2,3,6, and 7 seeds in the other), with the winners of each bracket meeting in a 1 game championship. The NCAA, in an agreement with CBS, switched to this format so there would be one, made for TV, winner take all championship game. Previously, all 8 teams were in one double elimination bracket. In 2003, the dual bracket format was kept in place, but the final series between the two bracket winners was made a best 2 out of 3 series.

Famous quotes containing the words college, world and/or series:

The only trouble here is they won’t let us study enough. They are so afraid we shall break down and you know the reputation of the College is at stake, for the question is, can girls get a college degree without ruining their health?
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)

Three words that still have meaning, that I think we can apply to all professional writing, are discovery, originality, invention. The professional writer discovers some aspect of the world and invents out of the speech of his time some particularly apt and original way of putting it down on paper.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

The professional celebrity, male and female, is the crowning result of the star system of a society that makes a fetish of competition. In America, this system is carried to the point where a man who can knock a small white ball into a series of holes in the ground with more efficiency than anyone else thereby gains social access to the President of the United States.
    C. Wright Mills (1916–1962)
