The following names were used for named storms that formed in the north Atlantic basin in 1978. Storms were named Amelia, Bess, Cora, Flossie, Hope, Irma and Juliet for the first time in 1978. This was the last year that only female names were used, thus none of these names were used again. However, "Irma" will be re-instated in 2017 as a replacement when for "Irene", which was retired after its use in 2011. No names were retired after the 1978 season. Names that were not assigned are marked in gray.

Famous quotes containing the words storm and/or names:

    Thee for my recitative,
Thee in the driving storm even as now, the snow, the winter-day
    declining,
Thee in thy panoply, thy measur’d dual throbbing and thy beat
    convulsive,
Thy black cylindric body, golden brass and silvery steel,
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

If marriages were made by putting all the men’s names into one sack and the women’s names into another, and having them taken out by a blindfolded child like lottery numbers, there would be just as high a percentage of happy marriages as we have here in England.... If you can tell me of any trustworthy method of selecting a wife, I shall be happy to make use of it.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
