1935 in Science - Physics

Physics

  • January 8 - A.C. Hardy patents the spectrophotometer.
  • February 26 - Robert Watson-Watt and Arnold Wilkins first demonstrate the use of radar to detect aircraft, near Daventry in England.
  • Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen publish a paper arguing that quantum mechanics is not a complete physical theory (the EPR paradox). Discussion of this introduces the 'Schrödinger's cat' thought experiment.
  • Jacques Yvon introduces S-particle distribution functions in classical statistical mechanics; they will later be included in the BBGKY hierarchy.

Famous quotes containing the word physics:

The pace of science forces the pace of technique. Theoretical physics forces atomic energy on us; the successful production of the fission bomb forces upon us the manufacture of the hydrogen bomb. We do not choose our problems, we do not choose our products; we are pushed, we are forced—by what? By a system which has no purpose and goal transcending it, and which makes man its appendix.
    Erich Fromm (1900–1980)

Mathematics should be mixed not only with physics but with ethics.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

But this invites the occult mind,
Cancels our physics with a sneer,
And spatters all we knew of denouement
Across the expedient and wicked stones.
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)
