The 1933 double eagle (United States 20-dollar gold coin) is a coin which currently holds the record for the highest price paid at auction for a single U.S. coin. It was purchased for US$7.59 million. 445,500 specimens of this Saint-Gaudens double eagle were minted in 1933, the last year of production for the double eagle, but no specimens ever officially circulated and nearly all were melted down, due to the discontinuance of the domestic gold standard in 1933.

Famous quotes containing the words double and/or eagle:
“The worst feature of this double consciousness is, that the two lives, of the understanding and of the soul, which we lead, really show very little relation to each other; never meet and measure each other: one prevails now, all buzz and din; and the other prevails then, all infinitude and paradise; and, with the progress of life, the two discover no greater disposition to reconcile themselves.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Sleep softly . . . eagle forgotten . . . under the stone.”
—Vachel Lindsay (18791931)
