Zeng Jize - Early Career

Early Career

Zeng Jize (1839–90), a native of Hunan province, was the eldest son of Zeng Guofan (ζ›Ύεœ‹θ—©), a leading reformist minister at the Qing court, and inherited his father's title of Marquis in 1877. Zeng received a traditional Chinese education, but was also one of the very few Chinese officials who learned English and took an interest in European affairs. With these advantages he was persuaded to represent China's interests abroad as a diplomat.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or career:

Pray be always in motion. Early in the morning go and see things; and the rest of the day go and see people. If you stay but a week at a place, and that an insignificant one, see, however, all that is to be seen there; know as many people, and get into as many houses as ever you can.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)

Clearly, society has a tremendous stake in insisting on a woman’s natural fitness for the career of mother: the alternatives are all too expensive.
    Ann Oakley (b. 1944)
