World Leader Pretend (song)

Green is the sixth studio album by the American alternative rock band R.E.M., released in November 1988. It was the band's debut major label album for Warner Bros. Records. The band continued to explore left wing political values in the album's packaging and lyrics, promoting green politics. To promote Green, the band embarked on an 11 month world tour and released four singles: "Orange Crush", "Stand", "Pop Song 89", and "Get Up".

Famous quotes containing the words world, leader and/or pretend:

In this world of overrated pleasures,
    Of underrated treasures.
    Paul Madeira (b. 1904)

The exile is a singular, whereas refugees tend to be thought of in the mass. Armenian refugees, Jewish refugees, refugees from Franco Spain. But a political leader or artistic figure is an exile. Thomas Mann yesterday, Theodorakis today. Exile is the noble and dignified term, while a refugee is more hapless.... What is implied in these nuances of social standing is the respect we pay to choice. The exile appears to have made a decision, while the refugee is the very image of helplessness.
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)

Friendship is learned by watching and listening to you. If she sees that your friends are people you like and trust and don’t pretend with—people who suit you—she probably won’t pick friends who just pass by, or people who can help her or improve her status. If you treat friends in a special way, if you are kinder, more generous, more sympathetic, more forgiving with friends, she probably will be, too.
