Education and Civilian Career
In 1943, Abell was studying journalism and advertising at the University of Missouri in Columbia when he enlisted in the Marines. The service sent him to the University of Notre Dame for ROTC training.
After the war, he got his degree at Mizzou and went to work writing advertising copy for the Barry-Wehmiller Machinery Co. He moved to California in 1953 and worked in advertising. He retired in 1989.
