Personal Life
Shaw attended Barnard College in New York, but dropped out to pursue acting. Shaw was attending the college when she was approached by Stanley Kubrick for her role in Eyes Wide Shut.
Shaw was raised in a family of practicing Nichiren Buddhists, and embraced the philosophy during her first year attending college in 1996: "I was lonely and depressed, and I had so many questions about life. I called my dad every night crying, saying that I wanted to go home." As a core practice of Nichiren Buddhism, Shaw chants daimoku daily, and is also a facilitator of the SGI-USA Buddhist Association for Peace, Culture, and Education. Shaw mentioned her practicing of the religion in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in February 2009. Shaw has been engaged to behind-the-scenes film artist Kristopher Gifford since 2008.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:
“The secret point of money and power in America is neither the things that money can buy nor power for powers sake ... but absolute personal freedom, mobility, privacy. It is the instinct which drove America to the Pacific, all through the nineteenth century, the desire to be able to find a restaurant open in case you want a sandwich, to be a free agent, live by ones own rules.”
—Joan Didion (b. 1934)
“Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When youre chewing on lifes gristle
Dont grumble, give a whistle
And thisll help turn things out for the best ...
And ... always look on the bright side of life.”
—Monty Pythons Flying Circus. Mr. Frisbee III (Eric Idle)
