Concrete Cable-stayed Bridge: A New Design

The replacement bridge for the Sunshine Skyway across Tampa Bay south of St. Petersburg, Florida, was completed in 1988 and was the first major concrete cable-stayed bridge project in the United States. The Varina-Enon Bridge became the second. The design was selected because a high level was needed to clear a shipping channel, but there was a strong desire to avoid a drawbridge configuration following the collision of the SS Marine Floridian into the Benjamin Harrison Bridge at Jordan Point, a few miles downstream, in 1977. That complex bridge structure was out of service for over a year. At 157 feet (48 m) tall, the Varina-Enon Bridge is the second tallest bridge in Virginia after the Wilson Creek Bridge at 175 feet (53 m) which carries the Virginia Smart Road over Wilson Creek in Montgomery County.

Famous quotes containing the words concrete and/or design:

Poetry presents indivisible wholes of human consciousness, modified and ordered by the stringent requirements of form. Prose, aiming at a definite and concrete goal, generally suppresses everything inessential to its purpose; poetry, existing only to exhibit itself as an aesthetic object, aims only at completeness and perfection of form.
Richard Harter Fogle, U.S. critic, educator. The Imagery of Keats and Shelley, ch. 1, University of North Carolina Press (1949)

If I commit suicide, it will not be to destroy myself but to put myself back together again. Suicide will be for me only one means of violently reconquering myself, of brutally invading my being, of anticipating the unpredictable approaches of God. By suicide, I reintroduce my design in nature, I shall for the first time give things the shape of my will.
    Antonin Artaud (1896–1948)
