Nomenclature
The official name of the institution is The University of Alabama, where the "the" is capitalized and officially a part of the name of the institution. The accepted abbreviation of the official name is UA. While it is not uncommon to append "Tuscaloosa" to the name of UA in order to distinguish the university from sister UA System institutions UAB and UAH, this name—and accompanying abbreviation, UAT—is unofficial.
