Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM or Tufts Dental) is a private dental school and one of the eight schools that comprise Tufts University. Tufts Dental is located in downtown Boston in the Chinatown district. Admission into the School of Dental Medicine is highly competitive with an acceptance rate ~7.1%. The building is adjacent to Tufts Medical Center.
In 2011, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Gies Foundation presented Tufts University School of Dental Medicine with its 2011 William J. Gies Award for Outstanding Achievement by an Academic Dental Institution. The award recognizes leadership in teaching, research, community service, and diversity.
The School of Dental Medicine was established in 1868 as Boston Dental College. It was incorporated into Tufts College, which later became Tufts University, in 1899. Tufts Dental graduate Dr. Charles Quinn (DMD, 1942) led the fight to fluoridate Winchester's water supply as a tooth decay preventative. As a result of his efforts, Winchester, MA became the first municipality in the United States to fluoridate its water supply.
In addition to the DMD degree Doctor of Dental Medicine, Tufts Dental offers combined DMD/MS (Master of Science in Dental Research) and DMD/MPH (Master of Public Health) degrees. It has a diverse post-doctoral program including Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry, as well as certificate programs in Craniomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain, Advanced Dental Technology and Research Program, Implant Dentistry Fellowship, and Advanced Education in Esthetic Dentistry.
