Antiquarian Studies
Dering's antiquarian interests led him to amass a great library; his name is still associated with:
- the Dering Roll, an important 13th century Roll of arms, believed to be the earliest surviving English roll of arms. In 2008, the Roll was purchased by the British Library.
- the Dering Manuscript of Henry IV, Part 1, the earliest surviving manuscript of a play by William Shakespeare.
He concocted an ancient Saxon pedigree for himself, inserting details into various authentic documents and installing fake monuments in the church.

Famous quotes containing the words antiquarian and/or studies:
“You know I am given to antiquarian and genealogical pursuits. An old family letter is a delight to my eyes. I can prowl in old trunks of letters by the day with undiminished zest.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
“...Womens Studies can amount simply to compensatory history; too often they fail to challenge the intellectual and political structures that must be challenged if women as a group are ever to come into collective, nonexclusionary freedom.”
—Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
