Coerced and Voluntary Disaffiliation
In most cases, disaffilation is voluntary, but in some cases it is coerced. One form of coerced disaffiliation is expulsion (including excommunication) by the religious group. Deprogramming may involve kidnapping, though deprogramming sometimes fails (i.e., the deprogrammed member may go back to the religious group).

Famous quotes containing the words coerced and/or voluntary:
“A woman simply is, but a man must become. Masculinity is risky and elusive. It is achieved by a revolt from woman, and it is confirmed only by other men.... Manhood coerced into sensitivity is no manhood at all.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“I am willing to pledge myself that if the time should ever come that the voluntary agencies of the country together with the local and state governments are unable to find resources with which to prevent hunger and suffering ... I will ask the aid of every resource of the Federal Government.... I have the faith in the American people that such a day will not come.”
—Herbert Hoover (18741964)
