Rebecca Wells - Writing Career

Writing Career

Her current works are set in Louisiana. Although the protagonist of Divine Secrets is a play director, like her, Wells says, "My work is a result of my imagination dancing a kind of psycho-spiritual tango with my own history, and the final harvest is fiction, not memoir."

Her first novel, sometimes referred to as a collection of short stories, was Little Altars Everywhere. This volume introduced the Walker family. It won the Western States Book Award and became a New York Times bestseller.

Her second novel, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, continued and expanded the mythos surrounding the Walker clan. It also developed the other Ya-Yas, best friends of Vivi Walker. It became a number one New York Times bestseller and was made into a movie starring Sandra Bullock in 2002. It won the 1999 Adult Trade ABBY Award and Ya-Ya clubs came into existence worldwide.

Her third novel, another Divine Secrets prequel Ya-Yas in Bloom with more information about the early lives of the Ya-Ya Sisters, also became a New York Times bestseller.

The Crowning Glory of Calla Lily Ponder introduced a wholly new set of characters and Louisiana settings.

Famous quotes containing the words writing and/or career:

The question mark is alright when it is all alone when it
is used as a brand on cattle or when it could be used
in decoration but connected with writing it is
    completely entirely completely uninteresting.... A
question is a question, anybody can know that a
question is a question and so why add to it the
question mark when it is already there when the
question is already there in the writing.
    Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)

John Brown’s career for the last six weeks of his life was meteor-like, flashing through the darkness in which we live. I know of nothing so miraculous in our history.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
