Pycnocline - Biological Function

Biological Function

The growth rate of phytoplankton is controlled by the nutrient concentration and the regeneration of nutrients in the sea is very important part of the interaction between higher and lower trophic levels. The separation due to the pycnocline formation prevents the supply of nutrients from the lower layer into the upper layer. Nutrient fluxes through the pycnocline are lower than at other surface layers.

Famous quotes containing the words biological and/or function:

    No poetic phantasy
    but a biological reality,
    a fact: I am an entity
    like bird, insect, plant
    or sea-plant cell;
    I live; I am alive.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

    As a medium of exchange,... worrying regulates intimacy, and it is often an appropriate response to ordinary demands that begin to feel excessive. But from a modernized Freudian view, worrying—as a reflex response to demand—never puts the self or the objects of its interest into question, and that is precisely its function in psychic life. It domesticates self-doubt.
    Adam Phillips, British child psychoanalyst. “Worrying and Its Discontents,” in On Kissing, Tickling, and Being Bored, p. 58, Harvard University Press (1993)
