Prehistoric Italy

The territory of what is now Italy was settled by Neanderthal man in the Lower Palaeolithic, roughly 500,000 years ago. As elsewhere in Europe, the Neanderthals co-existed with Homo sapiens for some time after their arrival ca. 40,000 years ago.

Italian cultures of the Bronze Age include the Terramare culture, the Villanovan culture and the Castellieri. Other prehistoric civilizations are the culture of Canegrate and that of Remedello.
