Political Parties and Elections

For other political parties see Political parties in Ukraine. An overview on elections and election results is included in Elections in Ukraine.

Ukrainian parties tend not have a clear ideology but tend to be centred around civilizational and geostrategic orientations rather than economic and socio-political agendas (as in Western politics), personalities and business interests. Party membership is lower than 1% of the population eligible to vote (compared to an average 4.7% in the European Union).

Famous quotes containing the words political, parties and/or elections:

Modern equalitarian societies ... whether democratic or authoritarian in their political forms, always base themselves on the claim that they are making life happier.... Happiness thus becomes the chief political issue—in a sense, the only political issue—and for that reason it can never be treated as an issue at all.
    Robert Warshow (1917–1955)

People who live in the post-totalitarian system know only too well that the question of whether one or several political parties are in power, and how these parties define and label themselves, is of far less importance than the question of whether or not it is possible to live like a human being.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)

In my public statements I have earnestly urged that there rested upon government many responsibilities which affect the moral and spiritual welfare of our people. The participation of women in elections has produced a keener realization of the importance of these questions and has contributed to higher national ideals. Moreover, it is through them that our national ideals are ingrained in our children.
    Herbert Hoover (1874–1964)
