Lionel Murphy - Personal Life

Personal Life

Murphy was the youngest son of William and Lily Murphy, and grew up in Sydney. He was educated at state schools, including Sydney Boys High School from 1936-40, and the University of Sydney, where he graduated in science and law, both with honours.

He was admitted to the bar in 1947, and became a QC in 1960. In July 1954, he married Nina Morrow at St John's Church in Darlinghurst, Sydney. Their daughter, Lorel Katherine, was born in 1955. In 1967, Murphy's marriage to Nina ended in divorce. In 1969, Murphy married Ingrid Gee (née Grzonkowski). They had two sons, Cameron Murphy (who, as of 2005, heads the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties), and Blake Murphy. Ingrid died in October 2007.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

Children’s lives are not shaped solely by their families or immediate surroundings at large. That is why we must avoid the false dichotomy that says only government or only family is responsible. . . . Personal values and national policies must both play a role.
    Hillary Rodham Clinton (20th century)

Many older wealthy families have learned to instill a sense of public service in their offspring. But newly affluent middle-class parents have not acquired this skill. We are using our children as symbols of leisure-class standing without building in safeguards against an overweening sense of entitlement—a sense of entitlement that may incline some young people more toward the good life than toward the hard work that, for most of us, makes the good life possible.
    David Elkind (20th century)
