Lettuce Sandwich - History

The lettuce sandwich was mentioned in print as early as 1894 in The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. The lettuce sandwich (bread with a lettuce filling) was a common food in the United States and England during the first half of the 20th century; preferred by the youth and served at fine luncheons. Lettuce sandwiches have been served in schools in the United States. The lettuce sandwich (bread with lettuce filling) is also an old-fashioned English food. Famous quotes containing the word history:

Postmodernism is, almost by definition, a transitional cusp of social, cultural, economic and ideological history when modernism’s high-minded principles and preoccupations have ceased to function, but before they have been replaced with a totally new system of values. It represents a moment of suspension before the batteries are recharged for the new millennium, an acknowledgment that preceding the future is a strange and hybrid interregnum that might be called the last gasp of the past.
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. Sunday Times: Books (London, April 21, 1991)

I believe that in the history of art and of thought there has always been at every living moment of culture a “will to renewal.” This is not the prerogative of the last decade only. All history is nothing but a succession of “crises”Mof rupture, repudiation and resistance.... When there is no “crisis,” there is stagnation, petrification and death. All thought, all art is aggressive.
    Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)

We aspire to be something more than stupid and timid chattels, pretending to read history and our Bibles, but desecrating every house and every day we breathe in.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
