Biography
He was born on 26 February 1884 to Reverend Dr. J. R. Porte in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland.
At an early age Porte joined the Royal Navy submarine service, but contracted tuberculosis and was discharged in 1911 with the rank of Lieutenant, RN. He learned to fly and became the managing director of the British Deperdussin Company. Porte flew Deperdussin aircraft in air races at Hendon Aerodrome and was a starter in the Daily Mail Circuit of Britain 1911. He later became a director of British Anzani.
