Images of England - Purpose

Purpose

Images of England was a stand alone project funded jointly by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The aim of the project was to photograph every listed building and object (some 370,000) in England and to make the images freely available online to create, what was at the time, one of the largest free picture libraries of buildings in the world. It is part of the National Monuments Record (NMR) archive of England’s historic environment.

The project started in October 1999 and the final images were uploaded in September 2008. There is a total of 323,107 images online.

The archive has deliberately not been updated, so any changes to the buildings since the photographs were first taken are not recorded. The official up-to-date list of all listed buildings in England is found on the National Heritage List for England.

Famous quotes containing the word purpose:

The purpose of polite behavior is never virtuous. Deceit, surrender, and concealment: these are not virtues. The goal of the mannerly is comfort, per se.
    June Jordan (b. 1939)

A major misunderstanding of child rearing has been the idea that meeting a child’s needs is an end in itself, for the purpose of the child’s mental health. Mothers have not understood that this is but one step in social development, the goal of which is to help a child begin to consider others. As a result, they often have not considered their children but have instead allowed their children’s reality to take precedence, out of a fear of damaging them emotionally.
    Elaine Heffner (20th century)

Rule of criticism: only attend to the shape, and the purpose will manifest itself.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
