Hong Kong Bar Association - Senior Counsel

Senior Counsel

After gaining ten years' experience, a barrister may be nominated to become a Senior Counsel (S.C.). In colonial Hong Kong before 1997, the title was instead Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) (御用大律師). After the transfer of sovereignty, the rank of Queen's Counsel has been replaced by Senior Counsel.

As of August 2009, there are 85 Senior Counsel (77 male, 8 female), out of a total of about 1000 practising barristers in Hong Kong.

Famous quotes containing the words senior and/or counsel:

I suffer whenever I see that common sight of a parent or senior imposing his opinion and way of thinking and being on a young soul to which they are totally unfit. Cannot we let people be themselves, and enjoy life in their own way? You are trying to make that man another you. One’s enough.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Critics generally come to be critics not by reason of their fitness for this, but of their unfitness for anything else. Books should be tried by a judge and jury as though they were a crime, and counsel should be heard on both sides.
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)
