Strengthened Hanna Neumann Conjecture

If H, KG are two subgroups of a group G and if a, bG define the same double coset HaK = HbK then the subgroups HaKa−1 and HbKb−1 are conjugate in G and thus have the same rank. It is known that if H, KF(X) are finitely generated subgroups of a finitely generated free group F(X) then there exist at most finitely many double coset classes HaK in F(X) such that HaKa−1 ≠ {1}. Suppose that at least one such double coset exists and let a1,...,an be all the distinct representatives of such double cosets. The strengthened Hanna Neumann conjecture, formulated by her son Walter Neumann (1990), states that in this situation

Famous quotes containing the words strengthened, hanna, neumann and/or conjecture:

If the child-caregiver relationship is nurturing, reliable and often even joyous, the child’s confidence in human relationships as a source of comfort and reciprocity will be strengthened and expanded in spite of the parent’s absence. The child will learn that not only are the parents to be trusted but that other people are trustworthy as well.
    Alicia F. Lieberman (20th century)

    Yabba dabba do!
    —William Denby Hanna (b. 1910)

What a lesson here for our world. One blast, thousands of years of civilization wiped out.
    —Kurt Neumann (1906–1958)

What these perplexities of my uncle Toby were,—’tis impossible for you to guess;Mif you could,—I should blush ... as an author; inasmuch as I set no small store by myself upon this very account, that my reader has never yet been able to guess at any thing. And ... if I thought you was able to form the least ... conjecture to yourself, of what was to come in the next page,—I would tear it out of my book.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)
