Vermont National Guard

Today, the Vermont National Guard, composed of the Vermont Army National Guard and Vermont Air National Guard are collectively known as the Green Mountain Boys, even though women have served in both branches since the mid-twentieth century. Famous quotes containing the words vermont, national and/or guard:

    Anything I can say about New Hampshire
    Will serve almost as well about Vermont,
    Excepting that they differ in their mountains.
    The Vermont mountains stretch extended straight;
    New Hampshire mountains curl up in a coil.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

    There is no calamity which a great nation can invite which equals that which follows a supine submission to wrong and injustice and the consequent loss of national self-respect and honor, beneath which are shielded and defended a people’s safety and greatness.
    Grover Cleveland (1837–1908)

    Let us guard against saying that there are laws in nature. There are merely necessities: there is no one who commands, no one who obeys, no one who transgresses. Once you understand that there are no purposes, then you also understand that nothing is accidental: for it is only in a world of purposes that the word “accident” makes sense.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
