Downes has been married (and divorced) twice and has two daughters, Christina & Alexandra, from his first wife, Norwegian former model Wenche Steen. He has an older sister, Helen, and two older brothers, John Gordon and Andrew. He currently lives in South Wales with his long-term partner.
