Future Enlargement of The European Union - Secessionist Scenarios

Secessionist Scenarios

There are a number of independence movements within member states, e.g., in Catalonia, Flanders, Basque Country and Scotland, where if the region became a newly independent state, it may want to be a member of the EU. The Commission has so far refused to form an official position on such scenarios, considering them "entirely hypothetical", and there is uncertainty as to what would happen if the new country wished to remain a part of the EU.

If a seceding province/country re-applied for EU membership, such a country would likely not have many problems in meeting the criteria for membership as it already complies with EU law.
