Fusilier - France

France

Traditionally, the French Army used the title "fusiliers" to designate ordinary role infantry, as opposed to élite troops such as grenadiers or light troops such as voltigeurs, carabiniers or chasseurs.

Today, however, such regiments are simply known as "infantry", although a number of modern French infantry regiments descend from fusilier regiments.

Only the French Navy and French Air Force use the title fusilier today. The navy's marines are known as naval fusiliers (Fusiliers Marins) and the Air Force's ground infantry are known as Air Fusiliers.

Famous quotes containing the word france:

It is not enough that France should be regarded as a country which enjoys the remains of a freedom acquired long ago. If she is still to count in the world—and if she does not intend to, she may as well perish—she must be seen by her own citizens and by all men as an ever-flowing source of liberty. There must not be a single genuine lover of freedom in the whole world who can have a valid reason for hating France.
    Simone Weil (1909–1943)

The moment Germany rises as a great power, France gains a new importance as a cultural power.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

While learning the language in France a young man’s morals, health and fortune are more irresistibly endangered than in any country of the universe.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
