Battle
Fog had begun to develop and from about 03:50 became very thick. It remained for about four hours, then began to lift. Just before dawn at 05:00 it was so dense that objects could not be seen 20 yards (18 m) away, but by this time most of the infantry had crossed the wadi. However, it made it impossible for Dallas to reconnoitre the proposed battleground and he waited at El Breij for the fog to lift, while his two leading brigades moved slowly forward. Visibility was improving about 07:30. By 07:55 the fog had lifted sufficiently for heliographs to be used to communicate with headquarters. But the fog was so heavy that all aircraft in No. 1 Squadron which had moved forward to a new landing ground at Rafa for the opening attack, had to turn back as nothing of the ground could be seen from the air.

Famous quotes containing the word battle:
“the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither
yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet
favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.”
—Bible: Hebrew Ecclesiastes (l. IX, 11)
“Much have I seen and knowncities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments,
Myself not least, but honored of them all
And drunk delight of battle with my peers,
Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.
I am a part of all that I have met;”
—Alfred Tennyson (18091892)
“... the big courageous acts of life are those one never hears of and only suspects from having been through like experience. It takes real courage to do battle in the unspectacular task. We always listen for the applause of our co-workers. He is courageous who plods on, unlettered and unknown.... In the last analysis it is this courage, developing between man and his limitations, that brings success.”
—Alice Foote MacDougall (18671945)
