### Famous quotes containing the words society, european and/or mathematical:

“I had withdrawn so far within the great ocean of solitude, into which the rivers of *society* empty, that for the most part, so far as my needs were concerned, only the finest sediment was deposited around me. Beside, there were wafted to me evidences of unexplored and uncultivated continents on the other side.”

—Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

“Americans want action for their money. They are fascinated by its self-reproducing qualities if it’s put to work.... Gold-hoarding goes against the American grain; it fits in better with *European* pessimism than with America’s traditional optimism.”

—Paula Nelson (b. 1945)

“What he loved so much in the plant morphological structure of the tree was that given a fixed *mathematical* basis, the final evolution was so incalculable.”

—D.H. (David Herbert)
