Famous quotes containing the words eric, museum, picture, book and/or art:

...there was the annual Fourth of July picketing at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. ...I thought it was ridiculous to have to go there in a skirt. But I did it anyway because it was something that might possibly have an effect. I remember walking around in my little white blouse and skirt and tourists standing there eating their ice cream cones and watching us like the zoo had opened.
Martha Shelley, U.S. author and social activist. As quoted in Making History, part 3, by Eric Marcus (1992)

A fine-looking mill, but no machinery inside.
Hawaiian saying no. 1702, ‘lelo No’Eau, collected, translated, and annotated by Mary Kawena Pukui, Bishop Museum Press, Hawaii (1983)

To be motivated to sit at home and study, instead of going out and playing, children need a sense of themselves over time—they need to be able to picture themselves in the future.... If they can’t, then they’re simply reacting to daily events, responding to the needs of the moment—for pleasure, for affiliation, for acceptance.
    Stanley I. Greenspan (20th century)

God forbid that any book should be banned. The practice is as indefensible as infanticide.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)

The wealthy are always surrounded by hangers-on; science and art are as well.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)
