Life
In the late 1790s, Dred Scott was born into slavery in Southampton County, Virginia, as property to the Peter Blow family. From what experts can conclude, Scott was originally named Sam and had an older brother named Dred. However, when the brother died as a young man, Scott chose to take his brother's name instead. The Blow family settled near Huntsville, Alabama, where they unsuccessfully attempted farming.
In 1830 the Blow family took Scott with them when they relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. They sold him to John Emerson, a doctor serving in the United States Army.

Famous quotes containing the word life:
“In the country, without any interference from the law, the agricultural life favors the permanence of families.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Well, on the official record youre my son. But on this post youre just another trooper. You heard me tell the recruits what I need from them. Twice that I will expect from you.... Youve chosen my way of life. I hope you have the guts enough to endure it. But put outa your mind any romantic ideas that its a way to glory. Its a life of suffering and of hardship and uncompromising devotion to your oath and your duty.”
—James Kevin McGuinness, and John Ford. Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke (John Wayne)
“He did not live, he observed life from a window, and too often was inclined to content himself with no more than what his friends told him they saw when they looked out of a window.... In the end the point of Henry James is neither his artistry nor his seriousness, but his personality, and this was curious and charming and a trifle absurd.”
—W. Somerset Maugham (18741965)
