Arab Spring

For more details on this topic, see Arab Spring.

The protests, uprisings and revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa beginning in 18 December 2010 and continuing through the present brought about the overthrow of the Tunisian and Egyptian governments. Libya was brought into a 6-month civil war which brought about the end of Gaddafi's 41-year rule. Bahrain, Syria and Yemen are experiencing an uprising. These countries are pending democratization, and Tunisia and Morocco have held elections that were considered fair by observers. Egypt is currently holding elections. Many other countries in the region are also calling for democracy and freedom, these include: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Djibouti, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Yemen, Kuwait, Mauritania, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan and Turkey.

Famous quotes containing the words arab and/or spring:

As the Arab proverb says, “The dog barks and the caravan passes”. After having dropped this quotation, Mr. Norpois stopped to judge the effect it had on us. It was great; the proverb was known to us: it had been replaced that year among men of high worth by this other: “Whoever sows the wind reaps the storm”, which had needed some rest since it was not as indefatigable and hardy as, “Working for the King of Prussia”.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)

The firelight of a long, blind, dreaming story
Lingers upon your lips; and I have seen
Firm, fixed forever in your closing eyes,
The Corn King beckoning to his Spring Queen.
    Randall Jarrell (1914–1965)
