Death and Burial

Gambino died of a heart attack on October 15, 1976, while watching his beloved New York Yankees at his home. He was buried in Saint John's Cemetery, Queens in New York City, as was Charles Luciano, and more than ten other lifetime friends. His funeral was said to have been attended by at least 2,000 people, including police officers, judges and politicians. Gambino left behind sons Thomas, Joseph and Carlo, daughter Phyllis Sinatra, and a family with a crew of 500 soldiers, after leading the Gambino crime family for 20 years, and The Commission for more than 15.

Famous quotes containing the words death and, death and/or burial:

Sinks to the deep abyss where Satan crawls
Where horrid Death and Despair lies.
    Thomas Traherne (1636–1674)

The dignity to be sought in death is the appreciation by others of what one has been in life,... that proceeds from a life well lived and from the acceptance of one’s own death as a necessary process of nature.... It is also the recognition that the real event taking place at the end of our life is our death, not the attempts to prevent it.
    Sherwin B. Nuland (b. 1930)

I heard the bell tolled on thy burial day,
I saw the hearse that bore thee slow away,
And, turning from my nursery window, drew
A long, long sigh, and wept a last adieu!
    William Cowper (1731–1800)
