Battle of Jena-Auerstedt - Opposing Armies

Opposing Armies

See the Jena-Auerstedt Campaign Order of Battle for details of French, Prussian, and Saxon unit organization.

Both armies were split into separate parts. The Prussian king had three forces:

  • 90,000 under Duke of Brunswick
  • 38,000 under Prince Hohenlohe
  • 15,000 under General von RĂ¼chel.

Napoleon's main force at Jena consisted of about 150,000 men in total:

  • Soult's IV Corps
  • Lannes' V Corps
  • Ney's VI Corps
  • Augereau's VII Corps
  • the cavalry of Murat.

Further north, in the vicinity of Auerstedt, the French forces were Bernadotte's I Corps (20,000 strong) and Davout's III Corps (27,000).

Famous quotes related to opposing armies:

The principle of majority rule is the mildest form in which the force of numbers can be exercised. It is a pacific substitute for civil war in which the opposing armies are counted and the victory is awarded to the larger before any blood is shed. Except in the sacred tests of democracy and in the incantations of the orators, we hardly take the trouble to pretend that the rule of the majority is not at bottom a rule of force.
    Walter Lippmann (1889–1974)
