Race History
- From 1865 to 1868 the race was run at Thebarton as a weight-for-age over two miles.
- In 1869, still at Thebarton, it was run as a handicap race over two miles.
- There was no Cup in 1871 or 1872.
- From 1872 to 1883 the race was run at "The Old Course" (Victoria Park) over two miles
- In 1884 the race was run over 13 furlongs (approximately 2,600 metres), as was every race held until 1944.
- After repeal of the Totalisator Act, the 1885 Cup was run at Flemington, and there was no Cup in the years 1886 to 1888.
- In 1889 running of the Cup resumed at Morphettnille when Sir Richard Baker and A. O. Whitington took over the course.
- In 1980 and 2000 the race was run at Victoria Park.
- Effective from 2007 the race was downgraded from Group 1 to Group 2 status following a decision by the Australian Pattern Committee.
